Phonics

Phonics will be covered in relation to your child's individual schools phonics programme.

Individual phonics needs will be assessed and a programme of study relevant to your child will be established .Children will gain fluency and confidence in order to complete the Phonics Screening Test to the best of their ability.

Phonics Screening

Each child in Year 1 /Year 2 will participate in a Phonics Screening Test as part of the governments requirements at the beginning of June. Children are assessed on their reading (decode) of 40 words, some of which are real words and some which are pseudo-words.

Literacy

Literacy skills can be covered as a whole subject in all areas as directed, in relation to the National Curriculum. Specific areas can also be targeted to further aid understanding and enhance students confidence.

Handwriting (including cursive)

Handwriting skills in line with your child's school policy can be adhered to, although cursive handwriting has been proven to aid phonics and spelling knowledge.

Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar (SPaG)

The implementation of the New Primary Curriculum has put more emphasis onto children's SPaG knowledge to a much higher level. All areas of punctuation can be covered in both key stages as directed by the National Curriculum.

Reading and Comprehension Skills

Reading is the art of translating text into spoken words or sounds, whilst comprehension is the ability to understand and interpret what has been read. Both essential skills for successful students.

Writing Skills

Writing covers many aspects from planning, narrative, non-fiction and creative writing through a range of genres. All of which can be focused on in more detail.
